We are experimenting with a little seed saving this year, and seeing what “volunteers” come up from last year’s tilled in seeds. So far the random cucumbers are tasty. Not everything that goes to seed is pollinated by the same variety, so its always a wait-and-see approach as to what you’re going to get. I was thrilled when I looked over my shoulder at my bolting romaine lettuce: check these blue flowers out! I love their little serrated “spork” leaves and their curlicue centers. If I had known romaine had such pretty flowers I’d have planted it in my ornamental garden, too! So I’m going to bag these guys when they go to seed and see what I get when I plant in the fall.
I would have never thought lettuce flowers would be so pretty.
